Guidelines for Digital Files

  • Digital Files: High-res PDFs are required for ad submission. The printing industry standard PDF/X-1a is based on the PDF 1.3 specifications.
  • Set the document size to an individual page trim size. Set up page layout as a single page. (NOTE: This also applies to spread ads. We work in a single page environment.)
  • Keep a 1/8” type-to-trim safety margin on all four sides of a page. Add 1/8” bleed on all four sizes of page for full-page ads. For best results when designing materials, keep important text or images a minimum of 1/4” away from both sides of gutter.
  • Make large type and large elements 99% black instead of 100% black if you don’t want them to overprint.
  • Imbed all fonts in file. Multiple Master fonts are unacceptable.
  • Make image resolution 300 dpi or higher. Enlarging images to have an effective resolution of lower than 300 dpi will result in loss of quality.
  • Make all color files CMYK format with no RGB, LAB or Index color elements.
  • Make sure all line art is 600 dpi.
  • Fractional ads run as non-bleeds.
  • Do not include copydot files inside a PDF.
  • Do not use JPEG compression. It is not supported and should not be used in any element.
  • Do not embed ICC profiles.

Exporting to PDF

The best presets for exporting to PDF and to handle transparency issues are:

  • Standard: PDF/X-1a:2001
  • Compatibility: Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3)

Color Proof Guidelines

Accepted for Contract Color: Kodak Approval, FinalProof, Matchprint, PolaProof or other SWOP-certified color proof. Color proofs must meet SWOP certified standards. For current specifications, go to www.swop.org. (The printer or publisher cannot be held liable for color complaints when files are submitted without an acceptable color proof.)
